The expansion of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing is changing the mechanical systems inside modern data centers. Direct-to-chip liquid cooling is becoming increasingly important as rack heat loads rise, and liquid-to-liquid coolant distribution units, or CDUs, transfer that heat into the facility cooling system. ASHRAE now describes direct-to-chip liquid cooling as an industry-standard approach for AI and high-performance computing, while current industry guidance identifies the facility water system as the primary loop connecting CDUs and computer-room cooling equipment to chillers, cooling towers, dry coolers, pumps, and other heat-rejection equipment.
For mechanical contractors, this creates more than a piping challenge. It also creates a pipe support procurement challenge. Facility cooling networks may require adjustable supports, pipe shoes, clamps, hangers, slide assemblies, and specialty interfaces in large quantities and many configurations. These components must arrive with the correct dimensions, materials, finishes, identification, and documentation—and in the sequence needed for installation.

Cooling Piping That Requires Fabricated Supports
A liquid-cooled data center can contain several connected but distinct fluid networks. The facility water system, or FWS, carries heat between the facility’s heat-rejection equipment and liquid-to-liquid CDUs or other cooling equipment. The technology cooling system, or TCS, is normally separated from the facility water by the CDU and distributes controlled coolant toward the IT equipment.

Start With Support Function, Not Product Name
A reliable request for quotation begins with the function of each support. A saddle, shoe, or clamp should not be selected only because it resembles a detail used elsewhere. The project’s pipe support engineer or engineer of record should identify what the support must do and provide the applicable loads and movements.
At a minimum, each item should be classified as a rest, guide, hold-down, line stop, anchor, hanger, riser support, or sliding support. The design information may include vertical load, lateral load, axial load, uplift, expected thermal travel, and the direction in which movement must be allowed or restrained.
This distinction is critical because similar-looking components may perform very different duties. A shoe intended only to carry weight is not automatically suitable as a line stop. A hold-down clamp designed to limit vertical and lateral movement may still need to permit axial travel. A low-friction slide assembly must be sized for its bearing load, operating temperature, expected movement, and specified mating surface.
Build the RFQ Around Fabrication-Ready Information
The most useful RFQ is not necessarily the longest. It is the one in which the drawings, schedules, specifications, and quantities agree.
Each support item should reference one drawing and revision. The drawing should show the overall height, plate thicknesses, structural shapes, saddle radius or clamp diameter, hole and slot locations, weld symbols, hardware, adjustment range, and any liner or slide material. The schedule should identify the pipe size and actual outside diameter when it differs from standard dimensions. A fabrication-ready pipe support schedule should include:
- Support mark and drawing revision
- Support function
- Pipe size, material, and insulated condition
- Quantity and required release date
- Design loads and movement, where applicable
- Support material and finish
- Liner, wear pad, or slide-plate requirements
- Tagging, inspection, and documentation requirements
Operating temperature should be provided wherever it affects liners, gaskets, coatings, adhesives, or low-friction bearing materials. For sliding supports, the RFQ should also define the movement direction and travel, required bearing material, and mating-surface arrangement.
Documentation must be established before pricing. Depending on the project, the package may require material test reports, certificates of conformance, welding procedures, welder qualifications, dimensional inspection records, coating or galvanizing certifications, and material traceability markings.

Select the Right Components for the Package

Adjustable pipe supports are useful where final elevation or alignment must be established in the field. Welded pipe shoes are appropriate where the project permits attachment to the pipe and the shoe is designed for the required load and movement. However, clamp force, slip resistance, operating temperature, and liner behavior must be considered by the designer.
Hold-down clamps, hanger clamps, riser clamps, clevis hangers, rods, beam attachments, U-bolts, and shim block assemblies address restraint, suspension, vertical piping, and field adjustment requirements.

Know When Outsourcing Adds Value
Major data center mechanical contractors often have sophisticated BIM, prefabrication, and piping-fabrication capabilities. That does not eliminate the need for specialty suppliers. It clarifies the opportunity.
Outsourcing makes the most sense when the contractor wants to preserve pipe-spool fabrication capacity, absorb a late quantity increase, obtain a specialized support outside normal shop production, or release a repeat package without disrupting higher-priority work.
It may also be practical when one package combines several materials, galvanizing or coating, threaded adjustment components, clamp-on shoes, slide plates, isolation materials, and detailed documentation. In those cases, the value of the supplier lies in managing the complete support package—not merely cutting and welding individual parts.
Current data center construction guidance emphasizes early supplier engagement, standardized procurement scopes, predictable manufacturing, tracking, and prefabrication to reduce schedule risk and improve material readiness.
A specialty pipe support manufacturer should therefore be evaluated on production planning and information control as much as welding capacity.
Control Revisions, Identification, and Delivery Sequence
Fast-track projects frequently release supports in stages. A practical plan may begin with equipment-yard supports, followed by mechanical-room piping, risers, and later interior distribution. The contractor should identify firm releases, preliminary quantities, and priority items instead of labeling the entire package urgent.
Revision control must follow each support from estimating through shipment. When a drawing changes, the contractor and fabricator should be able to determine what has not started, what material has been cut, what has been welded, and what has already shipped. A revised drawing without a clear disposition can create duplicate or unusable supports.
Tagging and packaging are equally important. Supports can be marked by support number and grouped by building, area, level, piping system, or installation sequence. Packing lists should match those groupings. This can also be achieved with specialized labeling systems.
Liners, FRP components, gaskets, and sliding surfaces should also be protected from damage and contamination during storage and transportation.
A lower unit price can quickly lose its advantage when field crews must sort unmarked material or discover that a critical first-release support is buried in a later shipment.
Avoid the RFQ Problems That Cause Rework
Most pipe support package delays begin with ordinary information gaps: missing heights, conflicting quantities, undefined finishes, unclear restraint directions, unlisted liner materials, or multiple drawing revisions in the same RFQ.
Another common mistake is requesting pricing before deciding whether MTRs, inspection records, special tagging, or a project data book will be required.
These issues should be resolved during bid clarification, not after fabrication begins. A short preproduction review between the contractor, support designer, procurement team, and fabricator can confirm the governing revision, open technical questions, first release, documentation package, and shipping sequence.
The contractor should also distinguish between final quantities and preliminary estimates. When the complete design is not ready, a firm initial release can allow manufacturing to begin while later support groups continue through design and approval.
